In Part One of this two-part series, we discussed the importance of determining the structural details of a rooftop deck before beginning construction. In this article, we will consider the more aesthetic aspects of designing your dream rooftop deck – this is where we have fun, get creative, and design a deck that everyone will want to visit.

JTL Studios are uniquely qualified to help you plan, design, and install your new rooftop deck. Here are the types of design attributes that we will help you to determine and implement.

  • Landscape Design: Plants, flowers, and greenery are important to any backyard design, but they are often overlooked when designing a rooftop. Homeowners will need to determine if they want landscaping that is as simple and flexible as planters and garden boxes – or if they want to incorporate trees, shrubbery, and grasses onto their living rooftops. Those who enjoy gardening but have limited acreage may greatly enjoy the flexibility that rooftop gardening can offer. Your landscape architect will help you to decide on the right variety of flora, given the fact that they will be exposed to direct sunlight, high temperatures, and (let’s face it) some potentially severe storms. Of course, you can also integrate a covering of some kind to protect your plants, but those are all decisions to make in the planning phase.
  • Entertainment Options: While your deck may be a great escape, chances are that you will want to share it with others on occasion. Think about the ways you want to use your deck to entertain family and friends – whether that be sharing cocktails, hosting game nights, or hosting a barbecue. Your desired lifestyle will drive the type of furniture and seating arrangements you’ll design into your rooftop deck.
  • Rooftop Deck Railings or Walls: As you plan your deck design, don’t neglect the railings that will keep everyone safe – this is, after all, a rooftop. While railings are never optional – the International Residential Code (IRC) requires any deck that is elevated more than 30 inches above the ground to have a minimum of 36″ railings – you have many design options. Homeowners can choose glass barriers to create an unobstructed view, utilize metal for a stylized look, or create high wood walls with vertical gardens if privacy is a concern.
  • Shade Options: One of the most significant factors on a rooftop in South Florida is the heat and persistent rays from the sun. The constant sun, rain  – and in some cases, salt air – can wreak havoc on your decking materials, plants, furniture, and guests. An easy option is a patio umbrella over seating areas, but you may also consider adding a retractable awning or a pergola; or perhaps grow trees that provide shade. Being on the roof provides an excellent opportunity for fresh air, breezes, and beautiful views – and having shady areas is critical to providing enjoyment no matter the season.
  • Water Features: Although water can add a significant amount of complexity to your rooftop design, it is a popular way to create a truly unique oasis. A rooftop pool is an extravagant addition that will set your home apart, but your design doesn’t need to be that complex. Ask your architect about the roof’s ability to support a jacuzzi or hot tub, or look into a fountain or waterfall that can also irrigate your plants.
